Resource Center: Roofing Accessories

Roofing accessories may not be the main components of a roofing system, but they play a critical role in performance, ventilation, moisture protection, and functionality. From vent stacks to skylights, every accessory must be properly installed and integrated into the roofing system to prevent leaks, allow airflow, and maintain code compliance.

Common Roofing Accessories & Their Functions

**Vent Stacks (Plumbing Vents):**

These vertical pipes extend through the roof to vent sewer gases from the plumbing system. They must be flashed correctly with pipe boots or lead collars to prevent leaks.

**Goosenecks (Roof Exhaust Vents):**

Also called roof vents or roof caps, these allow kitchen, dryer, or bathroom exhaust ducts to safely exit the roof. They feature a bent design to prevent rain from entering while allowing airflow. Proper flashing is essential.

**Line Jacks (Electrical Conduit Flashings):**

These allow electrical conduit or refrigeration lines to pass through the roof. They are typically sealed with rubberized boots and metal collars to ensure a watertight connection.

**B-vents & Metal Chimneys:**

Used for gas appliances or hot water heaters, B-vents must be properly supported and flashed at their roof exit to prevent water and fire hazards. They often require storm collars and specialized flashing kits.

**Skylights:**

Skylights provide natural light and ventilation to interior spaces. They must be properly framed, curb-mounted or deck-mounted, and flashed with precision. Poor installation is a common source of roof leaks.

**Solar Panel Mounts & Brackets:**

For homes with solar, mounts are installed through the roof and must be sealed with flashing boots or manufacturer-specific waterproofing systems to prevent intrusion.

**Attic Fans & Turbines:**

Passive and powered roof vents that help exhaust hot air from the attic. They contribute to system longevity by preventing heat buildup and moisture retention.

**Ridge Vents & Hip Vents:**

Continuous venting installed at the peak (ridge) or hip of the roof to allow attic heat and moisture to escape. Used with soffit vents to create a balanced ventilation system.

**Soffit Vents (Eaves):**

Installed under roof overhangs to allow fresh air into the attic. Work in tandem with ridge or exhaust vents to create passive airflow.

**Gutter Aprons & Drip Edge:**

Metal flashing installed along roof edges to guide water into gutters and away from fascia and decking. Essential for system protection and to prevent rot.

Proper Integration into the Roofing System

Every roofing accessory must be sealed and flashed properly — whether it’s a pipe boot, skylight curb, or ridge vent. Improper installation of accessories is one of the most common causes of roof leaks and warranty issues. At Performance Roofing and Impact Windows, we use manufacturer-approved flashings and sealants to ensure every component of your roof system is protected.

Accessories and Code Compliance

Ventilation accessories are often required to meet building code or manufacturer warranty requirements. Plumbing vents, attic ventilation, and exhaust vents must meet sizing and spacing standards to ensure safety and performance.

Enhancing Roof Function & Aesthetics

While many accessories are functional, some contribute to aesthetics and long-term durability. Options like copper goosenecks, solar-powered attic fans, and low-profile vents are increasingly popular with design-focused homeowners.
